It’s Women Rock’s 10th anniversary this year!  I am pretty proud to be a part of this event that has grown year over year to becoming a “destination event” in November.  I think all the vendors that have participated, the volunteers, the entertainment providers, the Rockin for a Reason participants, the companies that have given donations for our silent auction year after year, Como Oil & Propane and their generous donations with the Pink Truck, St. Luke’s  Breast Cancer Support Groups, St. Luke’s Foundation, St. Luke’s,  and of course, YOU -  those that attend this event have made it that successful and rewarding!   The support given to our local community has really made a difference.  Women Rock funds have helped those with Breast Cancer diagnosis with free informational seminars, sent staff to learn more at conferences,  helped by providing funds to do research locally, purchased gas cards, purchased booklets, purchased equipment, and purchased comfortable setting in the treatment rooms. I am most proud of the Faxitron Bio Vision machine that was received at St. Luke’s in October.  The most important information about this is that while the patient is still in the hospital – during the biopsy,  the doctor can look at the tissue through this machine and tell the patient at that time if she/he has breast cancer right away.. .rather than waiting for a week for the results… relieving the stress on the patient not knowing for a period of time!

If you are new to this website, this is our 6th year participating with St. Luke’s and we are forever grateful for their involvement in  making sure Women Rock continues – it is a fun event and a fun way to give back to your community… entertainment, shopping,  a large silent auction, fashion shows, cupcakes, chocolates, pampering massages, pink hair extensions, and more.   I also need to thank Charter Media, who puts money behind this event to make sure that all donations are 100% given back to the community – including the silent auction dollars, and the admission cost.  All expenses for putting this event on are paid for by Charter Communications/Charter Media.  A huge high-five to both St. Luke’s and Charter Media!

Then there was the Christmas City of the North Parade… and Como Oil & Propane staff and family, in their continuing support of Women Rock and the people in this community, walked in the parade  on that super cold day with a huge banner promoting Women Rock.  I am working on getting a picture of that to add to this site.  Thank you, Como Oil!    The more people that know about Women Rock, the more donations are given!  And, as always, our Como Oil & Propane partners continue to donate one cent for every gallon of propane it delivers to households in our region!  Think of their Pink Truck – and if you have a home that uses propane, please support this cause and Como Oil! They give so much back to this community!

Como Oil & Propane again supported and sponsored the 2nd Annual Slam Dunk Cancer Basketball Games on January 21st.  This event is a varsity basketball event between Superior High School and Duluth East at Superior High School.   It was the Boys Varsity game first and followed  immediately by the Girls Varsity game. The first 250 paid fans received a complimentary pink “LIVE PINK – BLEED BLUE” Spartan t-shirt!  Thanks to the contributions and efforts  by all those on each of the teams (thank you Duluth East and Superior High School Boys and Girls students on the teams!!!) the total amount  from this event donated to Women Rock this year was approximately $4,700!  Whahoo!!  Thank you to Joe Stariha from Como Oil & Propane who headed this event!  That’s over $11,000 in two years!

I am working on booth space now.. have started getting the entertainment lined up… and we are pumped to make this the best year yet!    Occasions Event and Wedding Design and … now Bridal wear too,  will be bringing the Chocolate Fountain back.  That was always so popular!  For entertainment, the newest in exercise – a pole dancing demonstration!!  (given by Avalon Education Institute & Wellness).   That is just a very small sneak peak at some new things this year.

If you have a special event you would like to do to help participate with donations… please give me a call!  How about a penny war in your company?  Charter Media did this last year and we had a great time with the competition between each of our departments!  Very simple and I have the one sheet with the easy rules.. just let me know (email me at bonnie.nimmo@charter.com).

If you want to have a team that will collect pledges  - instead of walking, you rock in comfortable rocking chairs (again, for 10 years running – provided by Slumberland Furniture) for a half-hour while you are at Women Rock.  First and second place top pledge getters receive rockers from Slumberland!  Each rocker also gets a special Women Rock t-shirt.  (Again, remember Slumberland when shopping for your furniture.. another company who cares about their community.)

Don't forget the purpose of this event is for breast cancer fundraising (that all stays local) and at the same time having fun.  $5.00  admission is all it is to get in the door; the lights, the pink lanterns, the pink balloons… all there to enhance the already exciting atmosphere!

Another event, please click to another page on this website… Rockin for a Reason. Please check this page out and consider forming a team to rock for pledges. It is much easier than walking, only a ½ hour of time, and all on the same day and same place as Women Rock! The pledges collected go entirely to the Breast Center.. no money taken out for t-shirts, or any expenses! We need some teams!

More to be added – but I want to get this information to you soon so you can get as excited as I am about Women Rock 2014!
